Ultimate aim of life is to attain moksha (Oneness with the Supreme Power). Shareer (body) is the vehicle for Atma in this performance. Therefore, body is to be protected till the end of stay of Atma in it. The knowledge of Ayurveda originated to take care of this shareer (body) with an aim:
II swasthasya swastha rakshnam aaturasya vikaar prashamanam II
(to protect the health of a healthy person and to cure the disease of a diseased person.)
According to Ayurveda health is defined as
sam dosha sam agni sam dhatu mala kriyah
prasann aatma mana indriya swasth ityabhidhiyate.

Health is a balanced state and function of:
3 Dosha - Vata,Pitta & Kapha.
13 Agni - (1)Pachaka Agni, (5) Bhootagni & (7) Dhatwagni.
7 Dhatu - Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja & Shukra.
3 Mala - Purish, Mutra & Sweda.
Along with happy and peaceful : Aatma(soul), Mana(mana) & Indriya(senses).
Ayurveda cures diseases and maintain health through two ways:
- Shodhana Chikitsa (Panchkarma/ Purificatory treatment)
- Shaman Chikitsa-(medicinal treatment)
Both ways of treatment are conducted either separately or together depending upon :
- Strength, Age and Gender of the patient.
- Strength, Acuteness/ Chronicity and Type of the disease.
